3 Ways to Refocus Kids on the Meaning of the Christmas Season

As the excitement of Christmas builds with lights twinkling, schedules filling, and wish lists growing — it can be easy for students to lose sight of the true meaning of the season. In the middle of the busyness, parents have a beautiful opportunity to gently guide children back to what matters most: God’s love, revealed through the birth of His Son, Jesus. During this special time of year, simple, intentional practices can help children understand the true purpose behind Christmas. Here are three meaningful ways to help refocus their hearts this season.

1. Remember the Greatest Gift: God Sent His Son, Jesus

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” — Luke 2:11

Christmas begins with the miracle of Christ’s birth. One of the most powerful ways to center children on the meaning of the season is by helping them see Jesus as the heart of Christmas — not just a familiar story, but the greatest gift ever given. You might:

  • -read the nativity story together and let your child ask questions.
  • -Talk about why God sent his son and what jesus' birth means for us today.
  • -Encourage kids to name something they are thankful for because of jesus.

When children understand who Christmas is truly about, the season becomes filled with awe, gratitude, and wonder.

2. Shift the Focus From Presents to Presence

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus Himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” — Acts 20:35

Finding gifts under the tree is exciting, but Christmas is not ultimately about getting more things. It is about sharing God’s love and being present with others.

Help children practice being present by:

  • -Looking for ways to serve those in need: write cards, donate canned goods, or pray for families facing hardship.
  • -Talking about how Jesus cared for others and how you can follow His example as a family.
  • -Encouraging simple, everyday acts of kindness at home, at school, and in the community.
  •

As children experience the joy of giving, they begin to understand the heart of Christ’s love in a personal way.

3. Cherish Loved Ones and Reflect on God's Hope, Peace, and Love

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.” — Romans 15:13

The holidays can quickly become busy and over-scheduled, but slowing down is often one of the most meaningful ways to honor the season.

Invite your family to:

  • -Spend intentional, distraction-free time with the people God has placed in your lives.
  • -Share stories of God’s faithfulness over the past year, including answered prayers or moments of unexpected provision.
  • -Talk about the Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy that Jesus brings into our lives—especially at Christmas.
  • -Set aside quiet moments to breathe, pray, and reflect on the incredible gift of God’s presence in every season.

Keeping Christ at the Center

As teachers and parents partner together to nurture students’ hearts, the Christmas season offers countless opportunities to point them back to Jesus. Whether through simple acts of kindness, quiet moments of prayer, or joyful celebrations of His birth, every reminder of God’s love helps children see that Christmas is not only about what we do, but about who He is.

When children grasp that truth, the season shines even brighter—with peace, generosity, and gratitude flowing naturally from hearts that understand the real reason we celebrate. May this Christmas be filled with moments that draw your family closer to Christ, the Light of the World.
