# Taboo Topics: How to Introduce Social Media to Your Teen Without Fear

[Diana La](https://blog.mtparanschool.com/author/diana-la) Oct 7, 2026, 8:35:24 AM

Social media has become a common way for people to stay informed and connected with their community and the world around them. Still, parents may hesitate whether or not to allow their child access to their own social media accounts due to the unknowns of what the content may expose. Yet, instead of living in fear of social media, parents can approach this topic with discernment and wisdom in a way that allows limited exposure for children until they are mature enough to handle more.

### ![FirstDayofSchoolSH-786](https://blog.mtparanschool.com/hs-fs/hubfs/FirstDayofSchoolSH-786.jpg?width=780&height=439&name=FirstDayofSchoolSH-786.jpg)

### What does the research say?

According to [Pew Research Center](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2025/12/09/teens-social-media-and-ai-chatbots-2025/), According to Pew Research Center, 92% of U.S. teens ages 13 – 17 use YouTube, 68% use TikTok and 63% use Instagram, making them the most widely used platforms among this age group. Roughly three-quarters use YouTube daily, and 36% report using at least one major platform “almost constantly.” While 74% of teens say social media helps them feel more connected to their friends, 48% believe it has a mostly negative effect on people their age. Additionally, 45% say social media negatively affects the amount of sleep they get.

On the Mount Paran Christian School podcast *From The Mount,* host Steve Kyle meets with New York Times best-selling author Mo Isom Aiken in the Taboo series episode onSocial Media where they discuss the positives and negatives of online exposure. Aiken emphasizes that social media is a tool that can be used for God’s glory but also for harm. She explains that society should use it wisely, practicing self-control and being intentional about how content is consumed and shared.

### When do you know if your child is ready for social media?

Most social media platforms require users to be at least 13 years old to create a personal account. Some of these offer teen accounts that allow parents to monitor aspects of their child’s activity. However, Kyle cautions that meeting the minimum age requirement does not necessarily mean a child is ready for social media. In fact, waiting until the older teen years is recommended. Each child develops differently; a child who is mature enough to navigate social media responsibly at one age may have a sibling who needs more time.

Introducing social media does not have to be done by giving full access to all content. Instead, parents can start conversations with their child about what is considered appropriate content. This process can start by looking through selected posts together and discussing videos or how to respond to a comment that is unkind. According to the American Psychological Association, active discussion and teachings in early childhood can help develop more independence in a digital world. Despite a platform’s age requirements, proof of readiness is not based just off an age number[(American Psychological Association).](https://www.apa.org/topics/social-media-internet/health-advisory-adolescent-social-media-use)

Aiken explains, “If a child is not yet operating at a maturity level of discerning what they are also consuming, you're running a really high risk in the social media space of what can stand to be set before their eyes.”

![FirstDayofSchoolE-377](https://blog.mtparanschool.com/hs-fs/hubfs/FirstDayofSchoolE-377.jpg?width=780&height=439&name=FirstDayofSchoolE-377.jpg)

Though social media grants access to things that may not be intended for a child, the parental focus may be turned to teaching how to discern what are good or bad forms of media and what to do when happening upon questionable content. Teaching children to develop wisdom, embrace the identity that is uniquely their own, and explaining the implications of over exposure can help them learn what is appropriate in the social media world. Kyle points out that “we can raise kids to still be on social media and to live in that space where they're actually thinking about the consequences of their decision. Who am I? How will people see me? What is the image I'm projecting?”

Aiken explains that when a child is brought up knowing who they are in God’s eyes through their identity, worth, God-given gifts and talents, they will know what is right and what matters most in God’s eyes. Using Galations 1:10 and Proverbs 29:25 as scripture to turn to, she stresses that it is important that children know their identity before they embark on the journey of proper stewardship in social media. By knowing who they are, the approval of the outside world is irrelevant and they will become less dependent upon the approvals of the outside world while on public display in social media.

### How Can You Set Social Media Boundaries For Your Teen?

Social media boundaries should be set for your child when you first introduce them to a new platform. For your child, it is helpful to explain why the rules you have placed are important. Examples can include protecting their sleep, their friendships, and their over exposure to content.

*Some common family practices include:*

— No phones in bedrooms overnight
— Screen-free times of day through family sharing device controls (while at school, during meals, overnight)
— Teen social media accounts with parental controls instead of full access accounts
— Regular conversations on what is good and appropriate content versus questionable overexposing content
— Parents can set positive examples by following similar practices

Teens should be getting ample amounts of sleep to aid their growing bodies. With the activation social media scrolling brings to the mind, studies have shown that social media interferes with sleep and physical activity habits ([American Psychological Association](https://www.apa.org/topics/social-media-internet/health-advisory-adolescent-social-media-use)).

![FirstDayofSchoolE-365](https://blog.mtparanschool.com/hs-fs/hubfs/FirstDayofSchoolE-365.jpg?width=780&height=439&name=FirstDayofSchoolE-365.jpg)

### How to Teach Your Child to Discern Good and Bad Content

Conversations can become everyday opportunities to discuss truth, compassion, humility and self-control. One way to approach topics on appropriate content and visuals is through a book series called “Good Pictures, Bad Pictures” by Kristen A. Jensen. This series has multiple versions depending on the age of the child that helps parents start the conversations with their children on how to discern good and bad pictures they may encounter online. It also guides children on who they can talk to when they have been overexposed and are not sure how to process what they have seen. Trust and boundaries with parents should be in place so that when a child is unsure of what they have seen or whether or not it is appropriate, they may have the confidence to approach you about it without reproach. By leading with these conversations in a welcoming environment, children are more comfortable to ask the tough questions.

### Lead with Example and Grace

Children learn from the role models in their lives, so parents should consider what they are modeling through their own social media habits. Kyle encourages both parents and children to reflect on the influence social media has on their daily lives. The APA similarly encourages parents to examine their media habits and model the limits they ask their children to follow[(American Psychological Association).](https://www.apa.org/topics/social-media-internet/social-media-parent-tips)

While parents cannot control everything their children encounter, they can offer steady guidance and teach them to practice wisdom. Proverbs 3:5–6 calls believers to trust in the Lord, while Ephesians 6:4 reminds parents of their responsibility to raise children in His training and instruction. By leading with these teachings, parents can be encouraged that God will continue to lend discernment and wisdom to them.
