Franklin D. Roosevelt argued, *“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.”* FDR recognized the danger of an uneducated society more than sixty years ago. A democracy that fails to educate its citizens eventually loses its freedom altogether. Schools that teach students to think critically and act knowledgeably are vital to democracy.   ![Edited-8960-2](https://blog.mtparanschool.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Edited-8960-2.jpg?width=780&height=439&name=Edited-8960-2.jpg)  ### Education and Democracy Roosevelt’s argument has held up well under modern scrutiny. Economists Fabrice Murtin and Romain Wacziarg have found a positive relationship between education and democratic participation, and the pattern is not limited to voting. Economist Thomas Dee has shown that a person’s overall educational background strongly influences their political knowledge, the quality of their political participation, and their support for free speech. Without a basic level of civic knowledge, students struggle to make sense of political information or to fit new information into a framework they already understand. Harvard economist Edward Glaeser and his colleagues argue that schools teach people how to interact civilly with one another, which a free society depends on. ### What a Free Society Needs From its Citizens Knowledge is only the beginning. Political theorist William Galston observes that a well-ordered society requires citizens with the right knowledge, skills, and character traits. The more citizens know, the more likely they are to engage in public life, and the less likely they are to feel distrust or alienation. At Mount Paran Christian School, a rigorous classroom experience sharpens our students’ ability to think, read, and discern, which strengthens their understanding of complex political events. These skills matter particularly to Christians, as we are called to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22), and we cannot act wisely on what we do not understand.   ![FirstDayofSchoolSH-785-2](https://blog.mtparanschool.com/hs-fs/hubfs/FirstDayofSchoolSH-785-2.jpg?width=780&height=439&name=FirstDayofSchoolSH-785-2.jpg)   ### Called to be Salt and Light Jesus tells His followers that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, and that their good deeds should point others to God’s goodness and bring glory to the Father (Matthew 5:13-16). Scripture also calls us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8-9), and an informed, engaged citizen is far better equipped to do that. Our eternal citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20; 1 Peter 2:11), yet we live in the world, bearing the fragrance of Christ wherever we go (2 Corinthians 2:14-15). It touches every dimension of a student’s time at MPCS, and it makes civic education more than facts about government. Our students learn how government works, why it matters, who they are called to serve, and how to engage with grace and conviction when they disagree. Honoring God, loving others, and walking in Truth are the attitudes we hope our graduates carry into civic life. They are the attitudes we strive to model ourselves on election day and every other day.
